Before the Holocaust, Belarus was home to about 1,000,000 Jews [VERIFY: figure]. The last century brought devastation. More than 80% of the community was murdered [VERIFY: figure], and decades of Communist rule cut survivors off from Jewish learning and practice.
Today, about 60,000 Jews live in Belarus [VERIFY: current estimate and date]. Most grew up with little or no connection to Jewish life [VERIFY: replaces the undated 95% claim]. The need is not only material. It is the need to belong.

Yad Yisroel was founded in 1990 at the direction of the Rebbe of Karlin Stolin, by Rabbi Shmuel Dishon and Rabbi Yaakov Shteierman. As the Soviet regime fell, Jewish communities across Eastern Europe needed rebuilding, and Jewish families needed a way back to Yiddishkeit.
In 1995, Rabbi Moshe Fhima and his wife Riki arrived to lead the work on the ground [VERIFY: the quote “to save the lives of Jewish children” is flagged for dignity review; recommend omitting or attributing as a direct historical quote only]. Three decades later, they are still there.

Our work connects education, food, housing, health, emotional support, and religious life. We care for the whole person through every stage of life, from a child’s first day of school to a graduate’s chuppah.
